Crusted Skin
Crusted scabies is a more severe form of scabies infection that some people may develop. This condition is characterized by the presence of a visible layer of crusted skin that forms over the abrasions and mite burrows. The name “crusted scabies” is derived from this distinct feature. Typically, this condition occurs when a person is infected with a large number of mites, often in the thousands. However, individuals with weakened immune systems can also experience crusted scabies, even if only a few mites are present.
Contact with Someone Who Has Scabies
While coming into contact with someone who has scabies is not a direct symptom of infection, it significantly increases the risk of contracting the infection and developing symptoms. Scabies is a highly contagious condition that spreads through skin-to-skin contact. If there is a suspicion of having contracted the infection, it is crucial to consult a doctor immediately to discuss preventive measures. Additionally, individuals should thoroughly wash all clothing and linens that they may have come into contact with during their infection to prevent further spread.
