How Lack of Sleep Can Lead to Weight Gain

In addition to the hormonal changes, sleep deprivation can also affect insulin levels. Lack of sleep makes our bodies insulin-resistant, meaning that they struggle to efficiently process glucose and regulate blood sugar levels. As a result, the body compensates by producing more insulin, which can lead to weight gain over time.

Furthermore, the combination of increased ghrelin levels, decreased leptin levels, and disrupted insulin regulation can trigger cravings for unhealthy foods. Sleep-deprived individuals tend to have a heightened desire for high-calorie and sugary snacks, which can further contribute to weight gain.

Therefore, it is crucial to prioritize quality sleep to maintain a healthy weight. By getting enough sleep, we can help regulate our hunger and fullness cues, stabilize our hormones, and reduce the likelihood of overeating and weight gain.
