In the case of endometrial cancer, the uterus typically remains small, making it difficult for the doctor to detect through palpation of the abdomen. However, uterine sarcoma can cause the uterus to become tender and enlarged, allowing for easier identification.
Individuals with uterine sarcoma may also experience ascites as one of the initial symptoms. Ascites refers to the accumulation of fluid in the abdomen and is commonly associated with advanced or recurring cancer.
Risk Factors for Uterine Cancer
Recognizing the importance of certain symptoms is crucial, particularly for individuals who possess risk factors associated with uterine cancer. These risk factors include type 2 diabetes, obesity, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a family history of endometrial cancer, the use of estrogen-only hormone replacement therapy following menopause, and age, as menopausal women have a higher likelihood of developing the disease. Additionally, prolonged exposure to estrogen can also increase the risk of uterine cancer, which may be due to factors such as early onset of menstruation, nulliparity (never having children), or late menopause.
