Is LASIK Surgery Safe?
LASIK surgery is generally considered to be a safe procedure, although it is important to note that no surgery is completely risk-free. Even relatively simple procedures like treating an ingrown toenail carry some level of risk. Therefore, it is impossible to guarantee that eye surgery, such as LASIK, is entirely without risk. However, research indicates that the risk of complications can vary depending on the type of LASIK procedure performed.
Flap LASIK, for example, offers a faster healing time but also carries a higher risk of infection and other complications. On the other hand, flapless LASIK may result in less pleasant aftereffects for patients, but it significantly reduces the chances of developing problems like infections or tears.
Is LASIK procedure the same for each eye?
When it comes to LASIK procedure, not every eye requires the same approach. Each individual may experience different vision issues in their eyes, and as a result, the type of LASIK recommended may vary. For instance, many older adults may have one eye that is better at seeing objects up close, while the other eye is more effective for distant objects. In such cases, optometrists may suggest flap LASIK for the dominant eye and flapless LASIK for the non-dominant eye. This technique is often referred to as “monovision.”
