Complications of Epididymo-orchitis
Untreated epididymo-orchitis can lead to various complications. One potential complication is the formation of an abscess in the scrotum, which may require surgical intervention. Scar tissue can also develop as a result of epididymo-orchitis, leading to infertility. This scar tissue can obstruct the flow of semen out of the body, making it difficult for couples to conceive. Additionally, acute epididymo-orchitis can progress into a chronic form of the condition, characterized by recurring flare-ups that often require treatment with antibiotics.
Risk Factors
Unprotected sexual activity is one of the primary risk factors associated with the development of this condition. However, there are also non-sexually-transmitted risk factors that can contribute to its occurrence. These include a previous history of urinary tract infections, an enlarged prostate, or any anatomical abnormality within the urinary tract that can potentially trap bacteria, leading to infection and subsequent inflammation.
