Surgical Treatment for Varicoceles
When it comes to varicoceles, not all cases require treatment. However, there are instances where surgery becomes necessary, especially if the individual experiences pain or discomfort, or if abnormal results are found in a semen analysis. Opting for surgical intervention can often lead to the cure or notable improvement of male infertility caused by varicoceles. Surgical treatment involves a varicocele repair procedure, where the affected vessel is sealed off, redirecting blood flow through the normal blood vessels that supply the testicles. Depending on the situation, the surgery can be performed under local or general anesthesia.
Recovering from Varicocele Surgery
After undergoing varicocele repair surgery, the majority of men can expect to return to their normal or non-strenuous activities within a few days. However, it is recommended by most doctors to avoid engaging in physical exercise for approximately two weeks or until any discomfort has completely subsided. It is not uncommon for some men to experience mild pain for up to three weeks following the procedure. Over-the-counter painkillers can effectively alleviate this side effect. Additionally, the surgeon may advise refraining from sexual intercourse for a period of time. If the purpose of the surgery was to correct abnormal sperm production, it may take a few months before the desired effects are observed.
