Treatments for Acid Reflux: Surgical Options
In cases where conventional treatments fail or are not well-tolerated, surgical intervention may be recommended for acid reflux. One such advanced surgical technique is laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication (LNF). This procedure involves the surgeon creating a small incision and using a specialized instrument to tighten the muscle, thereby minimizing acid leakage from the stomach. The patient will require general anesthesia and typically spend a few days in the hospital for recovery. Following the surgery, it is advised to take a minimum of one month off work to allow for proper recuperation.
Newer Surgical Techniques
In addition to the well-established and popular Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication (LNF), there are now emerging surgical techniques in the field. Although these novel methods are considered to carry no additional risk, their long-term effects are yet to be fully understood. One such technique that has garnered attention is the magnetic bead band (LINX). During this procedure, the surgeon implants magnetic beads to reinforce the muscles, ensuring they remain closed when the patient is not swallowing.
