Types of Cancers: Signs and Symptoms

Lung Cancer: The Leading Cause of Cancer Deaths in the United States

Lung cancer is responsible for the highest number of cancer-related deaths in the United States. While it may not show significant symptoms in its early stages, the disease progresses over time, leading to the growth of tumors that can either take control of the lung tissue or metastasize to other parts of the body. Indications of lung cancer include a persistent cough, coughing up blood, chest pain, a hoarse voice, shortness of breath, and fatigue. In some cases, individuals may also experience headaches, weight loss, and fever. When the cancer spreads to the bones, brain, liver, or adrenal glands, patients may encounter symptoms such as bone pain, difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain and swelling, and neurological issues.

Understanding Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is a specific type of cancer that affects only men and is more prevalent among older adults who have a family history of the disease. Additionally, men who are overweight or of African American heritage are at an increased risk. The prostate gland, which surrounds the urethra below the bladder, plays a crucial role in male reproductive health.

One of the most common symptoms of prostate cancer is difficulty urinating. This can manifest as a weak urine flow, a frequent need to urinate, or trouble starting and stopping urine flow. Other potential symptoms include burning pain during urination, the presence of blood in the urine or semen, and painful ejaculation or erectile dysfunction.

It is important for men to be aware of these symptoms and to seek medical attention if they experience any of them. Early detection and timely treatment can significantly improve the prognosis for individuals with prostate cancer.
