Signs and Symptoms of Severe Traumatic Brain Injury
Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) can have serious consequences and may render an individual unconscious for more than 24 hours. When this occurs, the chances of sustaining long-term or life-threatening injuries significantly increase. Although some individuals may recover fully and resume their normal lives, the most severe form of TBI typically necessitates hospitalization and a series of diagnostic tests, and in some cases, surgical interventions.
Symptoms that may arise in the future
Even individuals who successfully recover from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) may still encounter certain long-term effects. The extent of these effects varies depending on the severity of the injury, but medical research suggests a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Unfortunately, there are currently limited preventative measures available. However, it is important for these individuals to be aware that they are more susceptible to experiencing a decline in their mental abilities as they age.
