Scleritis: Inflammation of the White Part of the Eye

Scleritis refers to the inflammation of the sclera, which is the white part of the eye. While it is commonly associated with autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, it can also be caused by eye trauma, and in rare cases, by a fungus or parasite. Individuals with scleritis may experience several symptoms, including redness, blurred vision, tearing, sensitivity to light, severe pain, and tenderness in the eye. In some cases, the pain can even extend to the jaw, face, or head on the same side as the affected eye. If left untreated, scleritis can lead to vision loss or even blindness. The approach to treatment will depend on the severity of the condition, but it often involves the use of corticosteroid pills, anti-inflammatory drugs, eye drops, and antibiotics.
