Complications of Shingles
After the shingles rash has healed, most individuals experience relief from symptoms within a few weeks. However, in some cases, nerve damage can lead to prolonged discomfort. One of the most prevalent complications is postherpetic neuralgia (PNP), which affects approximately 10% to 18% of individuals and is particularly common among older adults. PNP is characterized by persistent pain at the site of the rash, lasting beyond 30 days after its disappearance and potentially enduring for months or even years.
Although rare, another possible complication of shingles is vision impairment. This occurs only in instances where the rash on the face spreads to the eyes.
