8 Symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome

Understanding Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD)

Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD) is a common sleep disorder that often coexists with restless legs syndrome (RLS). Individuals affected by this condition experience repetitive cramping or jerking of their legs during sleep. These movements not only disrupt their rest but also cause considerable discomfort. Consequently, the worsening of symptoms at night in those with RLS, along with the presence of PLMD, frequently leads to sleep disturbances. It is important to note that PLMD differs from RLS in that it is involuntary and exclusively occurs during sleep, while RLS manifests when an individual is awake.

The Impact of Night-Time Leg Twitching

Individuals with mild Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) may experience disturbances in their sleep patterns and minor hindrances in their daytime activities. In cases of moderate severity, symptoms may occur only one or two times a week. Nevertheless, when these symptoms do manifest, they can considerably delay the onset of sleep and disrupt daytime functioning. Severe RLS cases involve symptoms that occur more than twice a week, resulting in frequent disturbances in sleep and significant impairment of daytime function.
