Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a popular method for eliminating unhealthy or undesired skin cells. This technique is frequently employed to treat conditions affecting the face and scalp. The process begins with the application of a topical agent to the affected area, which enhances the skin’s sensitivity to light. Subsequently, the skin is exposed to a powerful light source, which effectively eradicates the targeted skin cells while preserving the healthy skin where the topical agent was not administered.
Treating AKs with Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy is a medical procedure that involves the use of extremely low temperatures. It is commonly used for various purposes, including the removal of warts. Similarly, cryotherapy can be employed to treat actinic keratoses (AKs). During this treatment, a dermatologist applies liquid nitrogen to the affected area, effectively freezing the abnormal tissue. While this procedure may cause some discomfort or mild pain, it is generally well-tolerated. Following the treatment, the surrounding tissue may develop blisters or crust over, and eventually, the AK will be eliminated.
