Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments of Discoid Eczema

Discoid eczema, also known as nummular or discoid dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition characterized by the formation of itchy, red patches. These patches can persist for weeks to months if left untreated and have a tendency to reoccur in the same area.

Symptoms of Discoid Eczema

Discoid eczema, also known as nummular eczema, is characterized by the formation of circular or coin-shaped patches on the skin. Initially, these patches are small and have a dull red color. The texture of the patches can vary, with some individuals experiencing slightly raised and rough patches with fuzzy edges. In other cases, the affected area may have oozing papules or blisters. It is common for the lesions to be intensely itchy, and the skin between the patches often becomes dry and irritated.

Where Discoid Eczema Lesions Occur

Discoid eczema typically manifests on the lower legs, torso, and forearms. Occasionally, patches may also develop on the fingers and hands. One common observation among individuals with discoid eczema is that when a patch heals on one side of their body, it tends to reappear in the corresponding area on the other side. Additionally, new plaques may emerge in previously unaffected areas.
