Dog Runs (The Other Kind) Common Causes of Diarrhea in Dogs

Dealing with diarrhea in dogs can be a messy affair. Similar to humans, dogs experience frequent elimination with loose, watery, or even liquid stools. In addition, your furry friend may feel weak, lethargic, and have a decreased appetite. The good news is that most cases of doggie diarrhea are not severe. However, if you observe blood in the stool or if your dog is also vomiting or running a fever, it is crucial to seek immediate veterinary care. Similarly, if your dog’s condition fails to improve within a day or so, professional assistance is advised. In most instances, though, the condition typically resolves on its own. While your dog recovers, it is essential to closely monitor their diet and ensure they have access to plenty of fresh water to prevent dehydration.

Eating “Unhealthy” Food

One common cause of diarrhea in dogs is consuming food that is considered “bad” for them. Dogs have a natural scavenging instinct and will often eat anything they come across. If your dog has diarrhea, it is possible that they consumed spoiled food, garbage, another dog’s feces, or some other contaminated substance that irritated their gastrointestinal (GI) tract. This condition is known as garbage toxicosis in veterinary terms.

It is important to closely monitor your dog’s diet. In some cases, it may be necessary to withhold solid food for a few days and ensure that they are drinking enough water. During this time, feeding them bland foods such as chicken broth and rice can help soothe their digestive system. Once your furry companion is feeling better, you can gradually reintroduce their regular diet.

Parasitic Infections and Diarrhea in Dogs

Parasitic infections in dogs, including those caused by Giardia, worms (such as hookworms, roundworms, or coccidia), can often lead to diarrhea. These infections are commonly transmitted through various means, such as mosquitos, fleas, or the consumption of infected feces from other dogs. Additionally, dogs can also ingest worms by licking their paws after being outdoors. In the case of puppies, they may acquire worms through their mother’s milk.

The most effective way to treat these parasites and restore your dog’s health is through deworming. By undergoing a deworming treatment, you can eliminate these pests and alleviate your dog’s diarrhea symptoms.
