What is the Gallbladder

The human body is a complex system composed of various organs that collaborate to transform consumed food into usable energy. Among these organs, the gallbladder holds an important role. Positioned beneath the liver, it serves the purpose of assisting in the breakdown of fatty foods. Specifically, this small pouch-like organ acts as a storage and concentration site for bile, an alkaline fluid crucial for digestion. Although the gallbladder plays a significant part in the digestive process, it is not classified as essential for survival. Remarkably, individuals can continue to function normally even without this organ.


Understanding the Gallbladder

The gallbladder is a pear-shaped, small hollow organ located beneath the right lower ribs. It forms a connection with the liver through the biliary tract. Alongside aiding digestion, it plays a vital role in the biliary system by storing and transporting bile. With a capacity of about 50 milliliters, a fully distended gallbladder can measure up to ten centimeters in length and four centimeters in diameter.


Understanding the Structure of the Gallbladder

The gallbladder is located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, nestled within a shallow depression between two sections of the liver. Encased by the peritoneum, which is the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity, the gallbladder narrows at the neck to create the cystic duct. This duct is connected to the common hepatic duct, and collectively, they merge to form the common bile duct, which ultimately extends into the small intestine.
