Crib bumpers, previously a common sight in retail stores and a popular addition to crib bedding sets, are now under scrutiny due to recent research on safe sleeping practices for infants. This has prompted a nationwide ban on crib bumpers, signed into law in May 2022, as they have been deemed a “hazardous product.”
Debunking the Controversy Surrounding Crib Bumpers
In the realm of pediatric advice and sleep safety guidelines, there has long been a consensus against the use of crib bumpers. However, the persistence of these bumpers in many bedding sets has caused confusion among new parents. Despite claims of safety testing, it is crucial to understand that such evaluations primarily focus on the materials used and the absence of choking hazards, rather than sleep safety.
The Hazards of Crib Bumpers
According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission’s data, crib bumpers have been implicated in numerous injuries and fatalities. Specifically, a study revealed that crib bumper pads were associated with 27 accidental deaths, resulting from suffocation and strangulation. Additionally, these bumpers were responsible for 25 non-fatal injuries, mainly minor contusions.
