As children progress through their school years, they face new challenges that can impact their sleep patterns. With the increasing demands of homework, participation in sports, and engagement in various extracurricular activities, school-age kids often find themselves staying active until late in the evenings. Unfortunately, this busy schedule sometimes prevents them from getting the recommended amount of sleep each night. While they are busy building positive social structures and engaging in various activities, the lack of sufficient sleep can lead to the development of sleep disorders such as night terrors, teeth grinding, sleepwalking, and snoring.


Sleep is Essential for School-Age Kids

It is important for school-age kids to maintain consistent bedtimes in order to promote healthy sleep patterns. Sleep disorders can negatively impact children’s emotional regulation and may even lead to hyperactivity. Moreover, insufficient sleep can hinder concentration, recall, and creativity, making it more difficult for children to succeed academically. While the ideal amount of sleep for kids under 10 is around 10 hours, this can vary from child to child. Some children may thrive with just nine hours of sleep, while others may require up to twelve hours. Therefore, it is crucial not to neglect bedtime routines and to establish regular bedtimes. Aim for school-age kids to go to bed between 7:30 and 9:00 pm as this seems to be the most effective time range.
