Addiction Support: Enabler or Helper?

Supervised Drug Consumption Sites: Best Left to Neutral Medical Professionals

When it comes to enabling someone with addiction, some individuals may argue that it’s safer for their loved ones to use drugs at home, under their watchful eye. They may claim that this approach ensures controlled consumption and prevents the occurrence of more dangerous behaviors outside the house. However, it is important to emphasize that supervised drug consumption sites should only be operated and overseen by unbiased medical professionals. It is not the responsibility of family members or friends to take on the role of monitoring or regulating this activity.

Enablers Assist in Avoiding Consequences

Enablers often shield their loved ones from the consequences of their addiction, inadvertently hindering their recovery. Instead of allowing natural consequences to occur, enablers may step in to clean up the messes, resolve arguments, and take care of other responsibilities. By doing so, they prevent their loved ones from fully experiencing the negative effects of their actions, which could have served as a wake-up call to seek help.

This pattern of enabling can progressively worsen as the enabler becomes more deeply involved. They may find themselves paying for bail or covering rent, further shielding their loved one from the consequences. Unfortunately, as the consequences become more severe and unmanageable, even the enabler is unable to control them. By this point, the addiction has become deeply entrenched, making it significantly more challenging to treat effectively.
