Recognizing the Physical Signs and Symptoms of Hepatic Encephalopathy
Hepatic encephalopathy not only affects cognitive function but also presents with various physical symptoms. In mild to moderate cases, individuals may exhibit slurred speech, breath that has a sweet smell, difficulties with fine motor tasks such as writing, and alterations in sleeping patterns. As the condition progresses to advanced stages, more pronounced physical signs may become evident. These can include shaking of the arms or hands, sluggish movements, yellowing of the eyes (known as jaundice), incoherent speech that is challenging to comprehend, and excessive drowsiness.
