Advantages and Disadvantages of Lithotripsy

Indications

Factors such as the number, location, and size of kidney stones determine whether shockwave lithotripsy is a suitable treatment option. Prior to the procedure, a CT scan is conducted to determine the precise location and hardness of the stone. This information helps in predicting the likelihood of a successful outcome.

Effectiveness

According to research and studies, lithotripsy has shown a success rate ranging from 70 to 80 percent. This procedure has been particularly effective for patients who have kidney stones located in the upper part of the urinary tract, such as the kidneys and the tubes that transport urine to the bladder. However, in cases where the initial lithotripsy procedure does not achieve the desired results, patients may need to undergo endoscopic surgery as an alternative treatment option.
