All About Acanthosis Nigricans

Other Benign Causes

There are instances when acanthosis nigricans manifests in individuals who are otherwise in good health, without any identifiable underlying cause. In some cases, this condition may be inherited. If it runs in the family, it can be present from birth or may arise during childhood or later in life. Certain non-hormonal medications, such as high doses of niacin and certain bodybuilding supplements, can also trigger symptoms. On rare occasions, acanthosis nigricans may develop spontaneously, which doctors refer to as an acral acanthotic anomaly.

Causes of Acanthosis Nigricans: Cancer

Acanthosis nigricans can be caused by certain types of cancer, particularly malignant tumors of the gut, with stomach cancer being the most significant contributor. In some cases, this condition may also manifest in the mouth, including the lips and tongue. While malignant causes are uncommon, the presence of acanthosis nigricans usually suggests the presence of an advanced tumor. Therefore, it is crucial for medical professionals to thoroughly investigate and eliminate the possibility of cancer.
