All About Amyloid Proteins

Treating Amyloid Disorders

When it comes to treating amyloidosis, the approach varies depending on the specific type of the disorder. Among the different types, AL and ATTR amyloidosis have received more attention in terms of research and treatment options. For AL amyloidosis, initial studies have shown promise in utilizing chemotherapy followed by stem cell transplantation.

In the past, managing ATTR amyloidosis typically involved a kidney transplant. However, recent advancements have revealed alternative effective treatments. The current focus in treating ATTR amyloidosis revolves around preventing the destabilization of healthy proteins and implementing the use of anti-inflammatory medications.

Ongoing Research on Amyloids

As the understanding of amyloids continues to evolve, researchers are conducting a wide range of studies with different objectives. Previous research on amyloids primarily focused on their negative aspects, neglecting their potential advantages. However, recent studies have revealed that amyloids possess potent antioxidant and antibacterial properties, leading to the designation of “functional amyloids.” These functional amyloids have the potential to enhance immune function, stimulate hormone production, and prevent RNA degradation.
