Excessive Yellow Bile: Causes and Effects

According to ancient physicians, the levels of yellow bile in the body were believed to be influenced by hot, dry environments and the summer season. However, they primarily attributed the occurrence of conditions associated with excessive yellow bile to dietary factors. It was commonly believed that the consumption of hot foods like peppers and chilies could elevate yellow bile levels. The consequences of high levels of yellow bile were primarily seen in the liver. Interestingly, ancient physicians accurately identified certain items that were harmful to the liver. They recognized that excessive alcohol consumption, overindulgence in meat, and a high intake of salt all contributed to elevated yellow bile levels and subsequently posed a risk to the liver. Thanks to modern studies, we can now confirm the validity of some of these claims.


Cholera: A Historical Perspective

In ancient Greek medicine, cholera was attributed to yellow bile and individuals with choleric temperaments. This bacterial disease primarily spreads through water sources contaminated with the cholera bacteria. Its hallmark symptoms include diarrhea and dehydration. Ancient physicians subscribed to the belief that cholera resulted from the putrefaction of yellow bile within the body. They also held the notion that diarrhea served as a means to expel the excessive heat generated by yellow bile. However, this expulsion of heat and energy proved fatal, as the body cannot sustain life without its internal heat and energy.
