Magnesium: A Natural Calcium Channel Blocker

Foods such as brown rice, cashews, oat bran, bananas, avocados, spinach, black beans, and soy are excellent sources of magnesium. However, it is crucial for individuals currently taking calcium channel blockers (CCBs) to consult with a physician before significantly increasing their consumption of magnesium-rich foods.
CCBs and Their Use During Pregnancy
When it comes to managing hypertension in pregnant or lactating women, doctors may opt for the use of calcium channel blockers (CCBs). Obstetric and pediatric specialists assure that the risks associated with CCBs are minimal, posing no harm to either the mother or the child. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), while small amounts of CCBs may pass into the breast milk, there is no evidence to suggest any adverse effects on the infant’s health. However, caution should be exercised, and medical professionals should monitor the blood pressure of the infant due to a potential risk of hypotension.
In certain cases, physicians may also prescribe CCBs to women experiencing preterm labor before reaching 37 weeks of gestation. The purpose of administering CCBs in such situations is to relax uterine contractions, effectively delaying a preterm birth.
