All About Heart Rate Changes and What Is Normal

Uncommon Causes of Increased Heart Rate

An increased heart rate can be a sign of various health issues, such as high or low blood pressure, anemia, or hyperthyroidism. However, there are also abnormal causes that should be taken seriously, such as electrolyte imbalances, adverse effects of medications, and the consumption of stimulant drugs like methamphetamine or cocaine.

What Causes a Low Heart Rate?

When it comes to heart rate, there is no one-size-fits-all. Just as individuals differ in their resting heart rates, the causes of a low heart rate can vary as well. Typically, a heart rate below 60 beats per minute is considered low, but this is not a universal rule. It is worth noting that a low heart rate can be normal in certain circumstances. For instance, during sleep, it is common for the heart rate to drop below 60. Additionally, active adults, particularly athletes, may have resting heart rates as low as 40 beats per minute.
