Identifying Abnormal Heart Rates
When an abnormal heart rate is identified, various tests can be conducted to diagnose the underlying cause. One such test is electrocardiography (ECG), which provides a visual representation of the heart’s rhythm and rate by illustrating the pathway of electrical impulses within the heart. Abnormal heart rates, also known as arrhythmias, can manifest in two ways: tachycardia, where the heart beats too fast, or bradycardia, where the heart beats too slowly.
Treating Heart Rate Issues
When it comes to treating heart rate issues, the approach may vary depending on the underlying cause. In the case of fast heart rates, medical intervention in the form of medication can often be effective in regulating the rhythm. On the other hand, low heart rates are commonly addressed using pacemakers. Interestingly, pacemakers can also be used to treat fast heart rates by delivering an electric shock to help regulate the pace and rhythm.
