Are Eggs Considered Dairy?

Despite often being located in the dairy section of grocery stores, eggs are not actually classified as a dairy product. Dairy refers specifically to the substances derived from the mammary glands of mammals, such as cows or goats. In contrast, eggs are an animal byproduct that does not originate from mammals or their mammary glands. Consequently, individuals who are lactose intolerant can safely consume eggs, as they do not contain lactose.


Is Casein a Concern for People with Lactose Intolerance?

If you are lactose intolerant, there is no need to worry about casein. While casein and lactose are both components found in milk, they are distinct from each other. Casein constitutes 80% of the proteins in cow’s milk, while the remaining 20% comes from whey. When someone has a milk allergy, it is actually an allergy to casein or whey. However, in the case of lactose intolerance, casein is safe to consume because it does not contain lactose. Nevertheless, it is important to note that some lactose-free dairy substitutes may still contain casein.
