All About Phimosis

Signs and Symptoms

Phimosis is a condition characterized by the inability to retract the foreskin over the glans. While many individuals with phimosis may not experience any noticeable symptoms, there are a few common signs to be aware of. One of the primary signs is the inability to retract the foreskin, which is often accompanied by discomfort or pain during erections. Another symptom that some males may experience is foreskin swelling during urination. In cases where phimosis is caused by an underlying medical condition or infection, additional symptoms related to that specific condition may be present. These symptoms can include redness, swelling, or soreness in the affected area.

Mechanical Causes

Phimosis can be caused by several mechanical conditions. These conditions include the fusing of the interior area of the foreskin with the glans penis. While this fusion is normal in young children and infants, it is uncommon in adults. Another mechanical condition is when the tip of the foreskin is too narrow to retract properly over the glans. This is a normal occurrence in children and usually resolves itself as the child grows. The third mechanical condition involves a short frenulum, which prevents the foreskin from retracting. The frenulum is a thin and elastic band of tissue located beneath the penis, connecting the foreskin to the glans.
