All About REST and Sensory Deprivation Tanks

Effectiveness

Many individuals maintain doubts about the effectiveness of REST and sensory deprivation therapies. This is understandable considering the subjective nature of the outcomes. Nevertheless, numerous studies indicate that these treatments yield significant benefits. A study conducted in 2018 not only demonstrated the effectiveness of float tank treatment but also revealed that 48 out of 50 participants successfully completed the full hour inside the tank. This achievement is noteworthy, as individuals with anxiety often exhibit resistance to new treatments and tend to avoid them. Additionally, a study conducted by Karlstad University in 2007 found that just 12 flotation sessions were sufficient to alleviate muscle tension, while participants who underwent 33 sessions experienced a considerable improvement in diastolic blood pressure.

The Process

Flotation centers vary in their approach to beginning a REST (Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy) session, but there are commonalities among many of them. Once a client is escorted to their designated treatment room, they will be instructed to remove all clothing and jewelry. While it is generally recommended to experience REST in the nude, some centers do permit the use of swimwear. Additionally, several facilities provide on-site showers for clients to utilize both before and after the session. To help individuals acclimate to the treatment, certain centers may play soothing music, gradually fading it out as the session commences. The duration of most REST sessions typically spans an hour, although specific centers may offer alternative time options.
