All About the Umbilical Cord

Proper Care for the Umbilical Cord Stump

Ensuring proper care for the umbilical cord stump is essential for new parents to prevent any complications. The key aspect of caring for the stump is to maintain its dryness. It is recommended to expose the stump to air and fold down the baby’s diaper in the front to avoid any rubbing or irritation. Until the stump falls off, it is advised to give the baby sponge baths only, as this will aid in the drying process. Contrary to previous practices, wiping the stump with alcohol is no longer necessary. It is important to refrain from pulling the stump and allow it to detach naturally. It is normal for a little blood to be present during the healing process, similar to a scab that might bleed slightly as it loosens.

Indications of Infection

There are certain indicators that may suggest a potential issue with the umbilical cord stump. These include red and swollen skin, the presence of pus, or the appearance of a pink bump in the surrounding area. If parents notice any of these signs, it is important for them to promptly contact their pediatrician in order to prevent the spread of infection. Additionally, if the cord has not detached within three weeks, it is advisable for parents to consult with their doctor as this could potentially signify an infection or immune disorder.
