Understanding the Causes of Edema and Anasarca
Edema is a condition that occurs when there is a movement of fluid from the blood vessels into the surrounding tissues. As a result, the overall blood volume decreases, leading to a reduced amount of fluid reaching the tissues. In cases where the kidneys are affected, they begin to retain both water and sodium. Although the body attempts to compensate for the lost blood volume by using some of the excess fluid, most of it accumulates in the tissues, resulting in edema. If left untreated, this condition can worsen and progress to a more severe form known as anasarca.
Understanding the Main Causes of Anasarca
Anasarca, which refers to severe generalized edema, is commonly associated with heart failure, renal disease, or cirrhosis. In individuals with heart failure, edema primarily occurs in the lower extremities due to inefficient blood return to the heart. Fortunately, this type of edema can be alleviated by elevating the legs. On the other hand, anasarca caused by liver failure or renal disease remains consistent regardless of whether the person is standing or elevating their feet.
