The Distinctive Lobes of the Lungs

Although the right and left lungs share similarities in terms of size and shape, they are not completely symmetrical. The right lung, for instance, consists of three lobes, while the left lung is slightly smaller and divided into two lobes. This dissimilarity is due to the presence of a cardiac impression in the left lung, which enables it to accommodate the heart that is positioned slightly to the left of center.

Pleural Cavity

The pleural cavity is a protective space that surrounds the lungs. Composed of two layers of membranes, it serves as a barrier and support system for the respiratory organs. The outer layer, known as the parietal pleura, is attached to the chest wall and possesses a high sensitivity to pain. Conversely, the inner layer, called the visceral pleura, covers the lungs and lacks sensory innervation. The pleural cavity, a thin gap between these two layers, contains a small quantity of fluid that functions as a lubricant, facilitating smooth movement during breathing.
