Are Earbuds Safe?

Earbuds have become a ubiquitous presence in today’s world, with most of us not giving a second thought to using them for at least part of our day. However, it might be worth reconsidering our obsession with these tiny devices. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently issued a warning highlighting the potential risks associated with personal audio devices, such as smartphones, stating that “1.1 billion young people are at risk of hearing loss.” This alarming statistic is primarily attributed to the fact that most personal audio devices can reach a maximum volume of 115 decibels, a level that can cause permanent hearing damage in as little as eight minutes.

Are Earbuds Safe to Use?

Earbuds can be safe to use if we adopt safe listening habits. However, the majority of people do not follow these practices. Earbuds function as miniature versions of large speakers that channel music and sound directly into the ear canal. When handheld electronic devices are played at maximum volume, the noise produced can be as loud as attending a live rock concert. Within a matter of minutes, this can lead to permanent hearing loss that cannot be reversed.

Understanding the Dangers of Earbuds on Hearing

Earbuds, despite their compact size, have the potential to cause significant damage to our hearing, comparable to the harmful effects of motorcycles and chainsaws. The key factor at play here is the volume level. Motorcycles and chainsaws are notorious for their dangerously high noise levels, reaching up to 100 decibels, which can lead to hearing damage within just thirty minutes of exposure. Surprisingly, even an mp3 player turned up to only 70% of its maximum volume is already generating around 85 decibels of sound. With earbuds directly transmitting this noise into our ears, the risk of hearing loss becomes imminent.

Hearing loss caused by earbuds is categorized as noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Studies have indicated that hearing loss among teenagers is now 30% more prevalent compared to the 1980s, and this increase is widely attributed to the widespread usage of earbuds.
