Are You Consuming Too Much Salt?

The Effects of Excess Sodium on the Body: Swelling and Edema

When you consume too much sodium, it can disrupt the normal functioning of your kidneys. This interference hampers their ability to effectively flush out fluid from the body. As a consequence, excess fluid becomes trapped in the spaces between cells, leading to a condition known as edema.

Edema manifests in various ways, including the appearance of large bags under the eyes and swelling in the feet. These visible symptoms are a result of the body’s inability to properly eliminate the accumulated fluid.

Decreased Appetite due to Loss of Flavor

As individuals consume more sodium, some may develop a tolerance to its taste-related effects. Over time, foods may begin to taste bland, even with the addition of a few sprinkles from the salt shaker. This reduction in flavor can lead to a decreased appetite and a subsequent increase in the amount of salt used during meals, further exacerbating the issue.
