Bankart Lesions and Shoulder Instability

Post-Operative Care for Bankart Lesion

Ensuring proper post-operative care is crucial in reducing the risk of reinjury in Bankart lesion cases, although it does not provide a guarantee. Typically, the first follow-up appointment is scheduled for the day after the surgery, primarily for a dressing change and to allow the doctor to evaluate the condition of the incision site. Initially, the patient will be advised to wear a shoulder sling most of the time; however, it is essential to remove the arm from the sling and let it hang freely for approximately five minutes several times a day.

In order to aid recovery, physical therapy is often recommended. This therapy assists the patient in gradually increasing their overall activity levels, as well as improving strength and range of motion after the surgical procedure.

Complications of Bankart Lesion

A Bankart lesion can lead to several complications, especially if surgery fails to restore normal mobility. One of the most concerning complications is when there is a bone loss of more than 25% in a bony Bankart lesion. In cases where the bone is severely fractured, alternative surgical interventions may be necessary as regular arthroscopic surgery will not suffice to repair the damage.
