Benefits and Risks of Uterine Ablation

Contraindications

There are several contraindications for uterine ablation, including:

  • Pregnancy or potential pregnancy
  • Active cervical or vaginal infection
  • Recent pregnancy
  • Weakness of the uterine wall
  • Abnormal uterine shape
  • Presence of an IUD
  • History of c-section, fibroid surgery, or pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Uterine, endometrial, or cervical cancer

It is important for women who fall into any of these categories to avoid uterine ablation as it may pose potential risks and complications.

Preparing for Uterine Ablation

Prior to undergoing the uterine ablation procedure, certain steps must be taken to ensure a safe and effective treatment. One important aspect of preparation is conducting a biopsy of the endometrium. This procedure serves the purpose of ruling out the presence of cancer as the underlying cause of abnormal uterine bleeding.

In cases where women of child-bearing age are scheduled for uterine ablation, their doctors may prescribe hormone blockers. These medications are administered to inhibit the production of estrogen in the body for a few months prior to the procedure. This precautionary measure helps to optimize the outcome of the treatment.

Furthermore, it is crucial for patients to discontinue the use of any blood thinners or NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) before the procedure. This step is taken to minimize the risk of excessive bleeding during the ablation process.

On the day before the scheduled procedure, doctors may also prescribe medication to help dilate and open the cervix. This assists in facilitating the insertion of the scope, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the uterine ablation procedure.
