Understanding the Causes of Buckle Fractures in Children
Children are naturally full of energy and constantly engaged in various physical activities such as running, jumping, climbing, and playing sports. With their active lifestyle, it is not uncommon for children to stumble and fall occasionally. When this happens, many children instinctively reach out their arms to break their fall. However, this reflex action can sometimes lead to a buckle fracture.
A buckle fracture is a type of fracture that commonly occurs in children. In fact, about 40 to 50% of all broken bones in children are forearm fractures, with approximately half of these being buckle fractures. Furthermore, three-quarters of these buckle fractures happen at the wrist. However, it is also possible for a buckle fracture to occur in the leg, often when a child lands on their feet after jumping from a significant height.
The mechanism behind a buckle fracture involves the impact and stress placed on the bone when a child tries to catch themselves during a fall. The force from the impact causes the bone to buckle or bend, resulting in a fracture. Although buckle fractures are not as severe as other types of fractures, they can still cause pain, swelling, and limited mobility.
Therefore, it is crucial for parents and caregivers to be aware of the causes of buckle fractures and take appropriate precautions to prevent such injuries. Encouraging children to engage in physical activities safely, providing proper supervision, and teaching them how to fall correctly can all contribute to reducing the risk of buckle fractures.
Buckle Fracture Symptoms
When a child has a buckle fracture, they will undergo severe pain and may also suffer from swelling, inflammation, bruising, and tenderness. Although a bend or curve in the affected limb may occasionally be noticeable, deformity is typically absent. The injured child may experience challenges in moving the limb, especially in rotating the forearm, and may also experience numbness in the hand or forearm if the fracture leads to nerve damage.
