Beriberi is a Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) Deficiency

Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prognosis

Diagnosing a thiamin deficiency involves a series of tests conducted by doctors. These tests include measuring thiamin levels through a TDP blood test, urine studies, functional enzyme test, and metabolic acidosis test. Once diagnosed, treatment options include thiamin infusions or oral doses. The prognosis for most patients is positive, with a good chance of recovery. However, individuals diagnosed with Korsakoff syndrome may experience long-lasting or permanent symptoms.

Research

Thiamin deficiency is currently being investigated in animal studies as a potential factor in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. The inadequate levels of thiamin and reduced activity of thiamin-dependent enzymes have been found to cause various problems in the brain, starting with oxidative stress and potentially resulting in the death of neurons. These are significant indicators of Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, memory loss, the formation of plaques, and alterations in glucose metabolism have also been observed, all of which are additional symptoms associated with the disease.
