Biliary Colic and Gallbladder Disease

Treatment and Surgery

Gallstones can be treated through a surgical procedure known as laparoscopic cholecystectomy. This is the most commonly recommended treatment for individuals experiencing episodes of biliary colic. While waiting for the surgery, patients can manage their symptoms with pain medications and a balanced diet. Hospitalization is not necessary unless the patient is experiencing severe pain or is unable to eat or drink.

Management

Nonoperative management is a viable option for individuals who are either unable or unwilling to undergo surgery for cholecystitis. In such cases, it is essential to prioritize patient education so that they are aware of the warning signs of acute cholecystitis and know when to seek immediate medical attention. It is crucial to note that patients opting for nonoperative management are at a higher risk of experiencing recurring attacks and developing infectious conditions such as cholangitis and cholecystitis. However, it is important to acknowledge that most physicians do not recommend nonoperative management for this condition.
