Arrector Pili: Muscles That Give You Goosebumps

The arrector pili muscles are tiny, smooth muscles found within the skin. These muscles become more apparent when you experience a sudden chill or strong emotion. When the arrector pili muscles contract, it causes goosebumps to appear on the skin’s surface. This physiological reaction used to serve a purpose for ancient humans who had thick body hair. It either made them appear larger and more intimidating to potential threats or aided in heat retention.

What is the Vomeronasal Organ?

The vomeronasal organ is a fascinating body part that serves a unique purpose in certain animals. Found in mammals, amphibians, and reptiles, this organ is responsible for detecting pheromones. Situated in the nasal cavity above the roof of the mouth, these sac-shaped organs play a crucial role in chemical communication.

Although there is ongoing debate about whether the vomeronasal organ has any connection with the human brain, it is believed that even if such a connection exists, most humans have lost the ability to consciously utilize the information it provides.
