Breathing Exercises for Your Physical and Mental Health

Breath Focus: A Technique for Relaxation

Breath focus is a relaxation technique that involves controlled breathing to clear the mind and induce a state of calmness. To practice breath focus, find a serene environment and either sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Begin by taking a few normal breaths, allowing yourself to settle into a relaxed state. Then, slowly inhale deeply through your nose, allowing your chest and abdomen to expand. Exhale slowly through your mouth. If you are experiencing intense anxiety, consider closing your eyes and directing your attention to something that brings you comfort and relaxation. This could be visualizing cuddling with your beloved pet, strolling by the water’s edge, or even listening to your favorite song.

Humming: A Calming and Health-Boosting Practice

Humming not only has a calming effect on the mind and body, but it also offers various health benefits, including an increase in nitric oxide levels. Nitric oxide plays a crucial role in the body, promoting the development and repair of the nervous system and expanding blood vessels to enhance oxygen delivery.

To maximize the benefits of humming, it is recommended to maintain an upright posture while seated on a firm chair or at the edge of your bed. Place your hands on the sides of your stomach for added awareness. With your mouth closed, position your tongue against the roof of your mouth and inhale deeply through your nose, allowing the air to fill your stomach, causing your fingers to gently separate. Next, exhale slowly while keeping your lips closed and produce a humming sound.
