Bumps on the Tongue: Transient Lingual Papillitis

Causes of Transient Lingual Papillitis

The exact cause of transient lingual papillitis remains unknown. However, researchers have identified several potential factors that may contribute to the development of this condition. These factors include local irritation, compulsive movements, stress, poor nutrition, thermal injury, consumption of spicy foods, alcohol consumption, and smoking. Additionally, individuals with gastrointestinal disorders or experiencing hormone fluctuations during menopause may be at a higher risk of developing transient lingual papillitis. It is also possible for this condition to be transmitted within households, particularly during childhood.

Diagnosis of Transient Lingual Papillitis

When it comes to diagnosing transient lingual papillitis, a physical examination is typically conducted. However, in certain cases where a clear diagnosis cannot be made, a biopsy may be necessary. It is important to note that there are other benign masses that can resemble transient lingual papillitis, such as pyogenic granuloma tumors and giant cell fibroma. Additionally, this condition shares certain characteristics with the strawberry tongue observed in scarlet fever and Kawasaki disease.
