Contrary to popular belief, yeast infections are not limited to women’s health issues. Men can also experience this uncomfortable condition, although it is less common. While both males and females can be affected by Candida albicans, an opportunistic pathogenic yeast, there are some notable differences between male and female yeast infections.
Locations and Types
Yeast infections are commonly associated with genital issues, but they can actually occur in various warm and moist areas of the body. These include the armpits, mouth, genitals, and different skin folds. When yeast infection affects the mouth, it is known as thrush, while a yeast infection on the skin is referred to as cutaneous candidiasis. In males, yeast infections can specifically occur on the penis and the foreskin, which are known as candidal balanitis and candidal balanoposthitis, respectively.
Symptoms of Candidal Balanitis
When it comes to candidal balanitis, there are several symptoms that individuals may experience. One of the most common signs is inflammation, which can cause discomfort and irritation. Additionally, burning and itching sensations near the glans of the penis are not uncommon and can intensify after sexual activity or masturbation.
Another symptom that may occur is the development of papules, which are rash-like bumps that may contain pus. These can contribute to further discomfort and may require medical attention. Pain during urination, sexual intercourse, or masturbation is also possible in individuals with candidal balanitis.
In some cases, candidal balanoposthitis may also occur, which shares similar symptoms with candidal balanitis. However, this condition may additionally cause the foreskin to become tight, a condition known as phimosis. Another possible symptom is a foul smell emanating from the penis or foreskin in certain infections.
