Can Sadness Be Healthy?

Understanding Core Human Emotions

In 2014, experts believed that there were only four fundamental categories of human emotion: happiness, sadness, fear, and anger. However, a more recent study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that there might be as many as 27 core human emotions. These additional emotions include surprise, contentment, disgust, and even relief. Psychologists generally agree that it is important for individuals to experience the full range of emotions, regardless of how they are categorized.

Understanding the Causes of Sadness

Sadness is a complex emotion that can arise from various circumstances. It can be triggered by significant life events such as going through a divorce or experiencing the loss of a loved one. Additionally, more everyday situations like children leaving for college or having a disagreement with a partner can also elicit feelings of sadness. Sometimes, even seemingly minor occurrences like misplacing a beloved hat or forgetting a birthday can contribute to a sense of sadness. Regardless of the specific cause, sadness often stems from the disruption or loss of meaningful human connections.
