Candida Auris: An Emerging Global Health Problem

Symptoms of Candida Auris Infection

When it comes to a Candida auris infection, the symptoms resemble those of other fungal infections. This particular infection has the ability to colonize numerous areas of the body, including the nose, lungs, heart, liver, vagina, skin, ears, brain, and wounds. The most prevalent symptoms experienced by individuals with a Candida auris infection are persistent fever and chills, which do not improve even after the use of antibiotics. It is worth noting that apart from general symptoms, individuals may also develop specific conditions such as urinary tract infections, skin abscesses, ear infections, or meningitis.

Risk Factors

Developing an infection caused by Candida auris shares similar risk factors with other Candida infections. Individuals with conditions such as diabetes mellitus, HIV, or cancer, or those who have undergone chemotherapy, hemodialysis, corticosteroid treatment, blood transfusion, or organ transplantation are at higher risk. Additionally, individuals with an indwelling urinary catheter or central venous catheter are also susceptible to C. auris infection. Moreover, people who have been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) or have undergone surgery within the past 30 days are more prone to developing a C. auris infection.
