Causes and Treatments of Eye Discharge

Dealing with Thick and Crusty Eye Discharge

When the eyelids become inflamed, it can result in eye discharge that becomes thick and crusty. This condition is known as blepharitis, which, though not usually serious, can cause discomfort and lead to redness of the eyes and eyelids. The accumulation of crusty eye discharge can even cause the eyelashes to stick together. In some cases, blepharitis may also cause flaking of the skin around the eyes. Moreover, it can serve as a precursor to other conditions, including pink eye.

Signs of an Eye Infection: Thick Green or Gray Mucus

When it comes to eye discharge, most cases are not a cause for serious concern. But if you notice thick green or gray mucus coming out of your eyes, it may indicate an eye infection. One common type of eye infection is conjunctivitis, also known as pink eye.

Bacterial conjunctivitis is a highly contagious infection that can lead to swelling and irritation. The thick consistency of the green or gray mucus is a result of the presence of pus. This infection is caused by bacteria known as pyogenic, which specifically refers to organisms that produce pus.
