Causes, Effects, and Management of Usher Syndrome

Type 3 Usher Syndrome

The third type of Usher syndrome is considered to be the least severe among the different types. Unlike the other types, individuals with type 3 Usher syndrome experience hearing loss during childhood or early adolescence, rather than being born with it. The severity and age at which vision loss occurs can vary greatly. Typically, individuals with type 3 Usher syndrome start noticing difficulties with night vision during their teenage years. As they reach midlife, severe vision loss becomes more common. While balance issues are uncommon during childhood, they tend to become more prevalent in later years.

Causes

Understanding the causes of Usher syndrome, a rare condition, is still a topic of ongoing research as there is much that remains unknown about its mechanics and origins. However, it is widely recognized that Usher syndrome is an inheritable disorder that is believed to be caused by genetic mutations. Different types of Usher syndrome are associated with different mutations. Currently, researchers have identified nine mutations associated with type 1, four mutations associated with type 2, and two mutations associated with type 3 of Usher syndrome.
