Causes of a Persistent Cough

Understanding Heart Failure

Heart failure is a condition that can often imitate certain lung ailments, causing confusion in diagnosis. Commonly associated with breathlessness and a persistent cough, heart failure symptoms tend to worsen when lying flat. Coughs experienced by individuals with heart failure can vary, ranging from dry coughs to those accompanied by thin, frothy mucus. Additional indicators of heart failure may include swelling in the legs, general fatigue, and a reduced ability to engage in physical activity.

Signs and Symptoms of Lung Cancer

Recognizing the early signs of lung cancer is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment. While a persistent cough can sometimes indicate the presence of lung cancer, it is relatively uncommon, particularly among nonsmokers. A more reliable indication of the disease is a cough that is accompanied by the presence of blood, along with chest pain or difficulty breathing. As lung cancer progresses and spreads, individuals may also experience bone pain and frequent headaches.
