Understanding Chronic Bronchitis

Chronic bronchitis is a condition characterized by the persistent inflammation and irritation of the bronchial tubes. This inflammation is typically caused by exposure to various particulates, including pollution, chemicals, and smoking. Unlike acute bronchitis, which is a temporary condition, chronic bronchitis is more severe and lasts for at least three months out of the year, over a period of at least two years.

Chronic bronchitis can often be accompanied by the development of emphysema, a progressive lung disease. In some cases, chronic bronchitis can even progress to a condition known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).


Common Symptoms of Bronchitis

Bronchitis, whether acute or chronic, presents with similar signs, although the duration may vary. While acute bronchitis symptoms usually improve over time as the body heals, chronic bronchitis tends to persist and recur. The common symptoms of bronchitis include:
